Hi! I’m experiencing an issue with Delta Chat on Android where notifications for incoming messages do not arrive. Notifications only appear after I open the app. All permissions are granted, but the problem persists. I would appreciate it if anyone could suggest how to fix this or if it’s a bug in the app.
Did you install via the Google Play store? The F-droid repo?
Google requires all notifications on Android to be delivered through their proprietary service, from which they can skim data (DC conceals everything but metadata from Google, but they will know when you get messages). Deltachat is decentralized as a design principle, but Google forces the centralization of Android notifications.
If you installed it through Google Play, you got Google’s notification channel. Elsewhere, you may not have.
This is a silly situation. Unfortunately, all we can do is complain, and lobby against laws that make it a crime to circumvent digital lock measures, thus giving Google the legal right to control other people’s hardware. Or we could win an antitrust action. That might be expensive.
