Rereading myself, I agree that my tone may be a bit heated. I would like to apologize if it is so. I just want to be clear that my goal here is to make Delta Chat something “really good”.
I’ve been researching in decentralized systems for the last 20 years. I studied lot of protocols. I always wanted to make “email better” and the current Delta Chat is an awesome idea.
With my experience, I sometimes see big holes in protocols design which may be explained by:
Protocol creators not having my experience (that’s where I believe I could add value if I can convince)
Protocol creators having planned for that but it is not there yet.
Myself misunderstanding something about the protocol
I just want to say that I still believe there’s a design flaw in current DC regarding spam but this should be discussed on a pure technical basis and maybe this forum is not the most appropriate place.
Even acknowledging Delta Chat is essentially encrypted emails, and that there is an expected Delta Chat way, I would say that if users ask for something feasible, you could try, in order to make Delta Chat more usable and attractive for more potential users.
Yes, however in usual email, CCO can hide emails. Couldn’t the sender email be hidden? Further, Delta Chat can encrypt not only the email containt, but also the email metadata. Particularly, it seems it should be possible to hide the `From:` data. Isn’t it?
I think this is really import to solve, and not just an inconvenience!
For one, the channel functionality is really important for me as a delta chat user, and I think, highly relevant to appeal to a broad range of users. Just imagine a local club broadcasting next events to the local community, same with companies, press etc.
And I don’t think it’s a necessity that the channels owner personal credentials are shared.
Yes, it is paired to the email address one uses to start the broadcast.
But for not leaking it, there should be a way to hash it in the qr-code/invite link to the channel, right?
If not, could a channel run on a newly created dummy email? one would need a provider for that, right? Or am I not understanding it right?
Just want to add that, after testing, the “create a new profile for that channel” is absolutely not satisfying.
I now have to manage two profiles, to sync it with all my devices, to constantly switch between profiles.
I think that feature is intended for those who want clear separation between two world, possibly on different set of devices (like private/work). But it is absolutely not a good way to handle the problem.
(I now heavily regret having created a second profile and I can’t go back (people have already joined that new channel and I cannot delegate it to my other profile)
