Tags and sub folders under "Saved Messages"

Feature proposal: allow tags and sub folders under “Saved Messages”

Personal opinion: we shouldn’t be turning “Saved Messages” into a note-taking app. One is better off using a specialized tool for that, such as Obsidian, Joplin. (I’ve even though about making Delta Chat give that advice in the description of the “Saved Messages” chat).

Besides, tags are already sort of supported: simply open Saved Messages and reply to a message with #SomeHashtag (this will make a usual reply message). Then you can find all tagged messages by using text search matching the hashtag name.

Edit: regarding folders:

If it were possible to search for reactions in chats, they could be used as shared tags.

is there a way to archive messages into Joplin?

You can create group chats with only self and use them as “folders”. You can even create a separate profile without any contacts just for note taking.

Well not a direct and convenient way, but just copy the text and insert the date.

Tags and sub folders are tools to organic a kind of an archive for important message.

DC has the potential to take over some of the communication which now still lands at the end in Thunderbird folders. Since an export of original notes and external tolls will likely not work it would be nice to have tools within DC and it would be good if DC provides not just workarounds but good tools to structure longtime communication.

on other option would be to provide an easy option to export a profile and chats to thunderbird or Joplin

You can send in one of the existing note taking or wiki webxdc into the saved messages chat that provides categorization for you.

looking for a way to organize selected send messages in categories - which webxdc app could help here?

I think it would be very useful to be able to organize saved messages and give more structure to how they are saved. A single saved messages folder quickly collects disjointed messages from different chats with different topics, making it harder to find the information you are looking for efficiently in the saved messages folder and harder to understand the context of each saved message.

As @link2xt pointed out, it is possible to create group chats with only self and use them as folders, but these “folders” don’t let you keep the sender information and timestamp of the original messages, which limits their full potential and usefulness.

I previously suggested that that Delta Chat treats any chat which has only one member the same as the Saved Messages chat and keeps the sender information when messages are forwarded there:

Another possibility is to add a “New Saved Messages Folder” option below “New Group” when people select “New Chat”, and then only allow a single user for this type of chat, keep the sender information and timestamp whenever messages are forwarded to these saved messages “folders”, and use the bookmark avatar as the default avatar. And as a minor enhancement, if someone selects a message in a chat and long presses the bookmark icon, Delta Chat could open a list of all the saved messages folders so they can choose which one to save to (same as forwarding but with all “normal” chats already filtered out from the list).

This would be a simple and practical way to organize and structure saved messages by building on Delta Chat’s existing features and interface without the need for a more complex redesign of “Saved Messages”. People could then also give meaningful topic-specific names to the saved messages folders such as “Trip Planning Saved Messages” or “Working Group Saved Messages”.

In addition to helping organize and structure saved messages, this would also let people archive saved messages (in a backup file) and delete saved messages “folders” for chats/topics which are no longer relevant, and restore them from backup only when needed, which is not possible with only a single saved messages folder.
