Add "Reply" Icon to top toolbar when long-pressing a message

Version: 2.25.0 via F-Droid

Reasoning
Due to time zones and distances, my ongoing daily conversations with my good friend happens in “chunks” - one of us may send up to 10-15 messages before the other has a chance to read and reply. As such, we heavily use the inline reply feature to respond to individual thoughts (messages).

Request
Currently, the Reply feature is “hidden” away behind the 3-dot menu upper right. I would like to Feature Request we add the Reply icon to the top main toolbar. The extra taps to access it so frequently have become a bit of an annoying workflow.

Implementation Thought
For myself and my friend, the Forward icon currently there is useless, I’ve never used/done that even with a lot of friends on Signal. If both icons don’t fit, I would vote to swap Reply and Forward UX design.

Slightly more complex to code would be allowing the user to choose which icons show on the main toolbar, stretch goal.

Thank you for considering!

hey, @straycatstrut - first of all, welcome aboard!

there is another option, that probably fits your needs even better:
swipe the bubble you want to reply to the right:

as the space in the long-tap-menu is very limited on android, and as reply is already accessible easily like above, the reply option there is the overflow menu. also, that way “reply” and “reply privately” stay together

but yeah, though swipe-to-reply is pretty common in all messenger apps, it should become a tips & tricks entry, will do that now - EDIT: did so

My Android, Pixel 6a, with DC version 2.25.0 does not swipe on messages at all when long-held (or not held as well). I do not use the out-of-the-box Gesture mode, I use the classic 3-dot mode for navigation on the overall device itself.

Edit your video shows a mouse cursor which looks like a desktop arrow, not an Android device.

for easier video recording, i used the emulator. imaging the mouse cursor being your finger, tapping the bubble, move to right, and then release

it works like that on all phones i know of, even the oldest.

here is some other picture showing the feature without an emulator: Swipe to Reply and other Android News - Delta Chat

i am not aware of some mode, that would affect the Swipe-to-Reply behaviour.

is this mode smth. you can disable or change on your phone? does it work then? can you try some other phone or another messenger?

I understand now, I would not describe the action how you’ve done - it’s “without long pressing, just swipe a message to the right” (there’s no tap and hold, it’s just… swipe with your finger in one motion). I was tapping and holding then swiping.

thanks a lot for coming back!

and great we figured it out finally!

i updated the instructions at Reply easily with "Swipe-To-Reply" - would you have understood it that way?
