Expected behavior
Syntax for advanced search like : from:foo before:yyyy-mm-dd after:yyyy-mm-dd
Actual behavior
Syntax search only
I find that date based search is always the most useful since it cuts out a lot of easily identifiable useless results of syntax search.

Discoverability in the UI would also be useful. In groups, restricting by sender would be handy.

There is a hidden feature: if you type is:unread into the search bar, chat list gets filtered to chats that have unread messages.
