I’m currently testing DC-Android 2.6 and AC 2.6. At the moment I can’t use DC-Desktop 2.6 because, after installing, it is not possible to load a backup or transfer a profile from another device with an older version via QR code.

DC-Android 2.6 and AC 2.6 are working fine so far, but I noticed that not all contacts were transferred during the update. I have two (test) profiles in DC-Android and two in AC. Each profile has the other one from the same app as a contact. Then, after the update, the contact from the other profile is missing. The other contacts are all there.

If you have a backup from v1.x you should run desktop 1.x first, import the backup and then run desktop 2.x which will migrate your accounts.

Edit: but it should be also possible to load old backups directly in 2.x versions

Great, looks great, but there are a few things that need to be adjusted:

  1. The email that appears when there is no encryption is not displayed neatly, and I may be too picky, but at least there should be a space between the time and the email.

  2. The confirmation status and email address in the profile are displayed after all the shared chats, and if there are many of them, it doesn’t look very good.

Other than that, everything is great, especially the channels. The only thing that’s a bit off is the quality of the group and channel avatars, which need to be improved in the same way as the profile avatars. Other than that, everything is fine.

desktop and iOS have space between letter and time, i filed an issue for android

for the “address” and “introduced by” line: these information are meant as additional data points to see who a contact may be and if things are reasonable. the “shared chats”, however, are a much stringer hint - therefore, they come first (if you have no or few “shared chats”, the other information are automatically up - and if you have 20 shared chats, you know that contact is already nicely introduced)

still, we see the point and discussed that already a lot, esp. “clicking through to the root” is not super-nice that way. at some point, we will probably iterate over

the quality of the group and channel avatars, which need to be improved in the same way as the profile avatars

they all have the same quality, however, note, that existing avatars are not updated automatically, and that desktop has a known bug

Other than that, everything is great

thanks a lot for that line :hugs:

I disagree that. In version 1.58.4, the avatar quality was improved on the personal profile, but in groups and channels, selecting an image compresses it to pixels.

Is it possible to simply install DC-Desktop 2.6 on macOS over version 1.60.1?
I usually download DC as DMG and not from the App Store.

Yes it is. We recommend to make a backup of the old account data in case you want to downgrade again. It is not possible to downgrade with the same account data from 2.x.

But just upgrading is fine!

I understand that channels are an experimental feature, but it would be great to add the ability for participants to react to the channel’s posts.

Do you get any error messages? Both should work on a device with version 2.x: loading a backup from 1.x or add it as second device to a 1.x device.

I’ve continued testing, and the problem only exists with one profile.
When I try to load the backup, I get this error message:

The other backups all load, but contacts are often missing. These are always contacts from my own profiles.
For example: I have two profiles, and each profile contains the other profile as a contact. After loading the backup, these contacts are gone. It doesn’t matter whether they are chatmail profiles or regular email accounts.
A few others are also missing, but I can’t see any pattern so far.

And the same backup works when loaded in dc-desktop v1.x ? Or when loaded with Android?

The backup was created with DC-Desktop 1.60.1 for macOS. I can load it into a 1.x version without any problems, but not into a 2.x version. I also tested DC-Android 2.6 and AC 2.6.

I also tested DC-Android 2.6 and AC 2.6.

with which result?

Same problem as with DC-Desktop.

@Raiden thanks for your report! I found and fixed the cause of the error message you got (see PGP migration fails if verifier contact was deleted · Issue #7043 · chatmail/core · GitHub), we will create new release candidates in the next days so that you can test it.

I think I know what the cause for the missing contacts is, but I’m not sure what to do about it; I created an issue on GitHub for it and explained the details there: The key-contacts migration hides contacts that are in no chats · Issue #7046 · chatmail/core · GitHub

I updated the post to include the new 2.8.0 apk files, with fixes of bugs found by you! thanks a lot beta-testers!

This link is broken because there doesn’t seem to be a file with that name in the directory, only the Google version is present for version 2.8.0
