"Backup too new, please update Delta Chat" message

Delta Chat version

Desktop app v2.35.0

Expected behavior

I want to login from a backup file (that I got from my phone app)

Actual behavior

I connect the phone to the laptop and select the backup file from the Desktop app that I just installed now. It works but not completely and shows a strange message.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Uninstall desktop app and install it again
  2. Click on + button to add an account, I already have a profile, import backup…
  3. Select the .tar backup file. It starts loading but in the end I get the message “Backup too new, please update Delta Chat.”
  4. Actually the account seems to have been loaded, but not totally. Most of the conversations and avatars are loaded, except from my own avatar (a ? mark is shown) and one conversation that I cannot identify on my phone (maybe a deleted user?)

EDIT: The ? mark was asking to configure my profile. I right clicked and wrote my username there, sudenly the avatar showed up and it is fine now. Only the strange unloaded conversation remains there (named: Error Loading Chat 126. chat: Failed loading chat Chat#126 fror…). But it is not a problem for me. I just let this post published in case it is helpful for devs. I got my complete backup on my laptop, as I was asking here, great!

If you import backup from a newer version of Delta Chat and see this error, then you need to update Desktop first to the same version. I’d suggest deleting the resulting profile, it is likely in some broken state and will cause problems in the future.

but I uninstalled the desktop app and installed again, so it should be the newest, right?

Did you export backup from 2.35.0 or from some newer version?

Arcane Chat 2,36

Current backup version number is 4, and it should be supported since version 2.29.0. There is no newer backup version. So Desktop 2.35.0 should import all backup version.

I opened feat: add backup versions to the importing error message by link2xt · Pull Request #7864 · chatmail/core · GitHub to make it easier to debug.

Could you point to the the place where you installed Delta Chat Desktop from?

I am using a Linux Mint based distro and I have this software store, I downloaded v2.35.0 of the desktop app from there. Is that what you were asking?

I also see:
599,0 MB
stable
Flathub

Could you open “About” dialog, then “View Log” and look for the line starting with deltachat_core_version= somewhere in the beginning? Which version is displayed there?

Was your Desktop on version 2.35 when you first imported the backup? You said you re-installed it.
Have you imported the backup again after re-installing? Did you get the same error?

This is what I see in the about section:

Delta Chat Desktop 1.58.2 (git: flathub)
Delta Chat Core v1.159.4
SQLite 3.45.3
electron 34.0.1
node 20.18.1

I don’t know what desktop version I had this morning. Anyway, there is something that I am not understanding properly. When I say that I uninstall the app… I mean that I go to the software manager program and I click on remove (I don´t have it in English but it is probably what the button says in English). Then I click on Install again. Well, I just did it once again and my delta chat user was there, logged in already… I am sorry if this is confusing. I was trying to give some useful information. I am fine actually for my personal use. So, sorry and thank you for your help. Bye!

By the way, something strange happened to me in a chat: I shared some pictures and some text using my phone app. On desktop app only the text arrived. When I move the mouse over my profiles avatar I can see a green circle and the word “updating…”

Version 1.58.2 is really old, should really be not used anymore. Current version is 2.35.

Maybe you have 1.58 manually installed via .deb file or something like this, next to the up-to-date 2.35.0?

should I download a .dev file from here and click on it for a newer version install? Get Delta Chat - Delta Chat

Flathub is likely the best option. What I don’t understand is why your version is 1.58 if you say you have just reinstalled Delta Chat. It should be 2.35 if you install the newest version from https://flathub.org/en/apps/chat.delta.desktop

Maybe it is because I haven’t updated or ugraded my OS for a long time. Sorry for the loss of your time, I will let you know if I fix this. I wont be able for some time. Bye!

By the way, it was fixed next time I switched on my laptop! I opened DC desktop app and there was no strange conversation “named” Error Loading Chat 126. chat: Failed loading chat Chat#126 fror…

Maybe it was the “devices messages” section, which I see now with a new message.

Also, when y put the mouse over my profile avatar, the message that appears with he green dot now says “connected”.

“have you tried to switch off and on again…?” Solved!
