There was recently an enhancement so that when clicking on the “is sharing their location” bubble, it would display the map.
Now there is also that 
symbol that appears as overlay in the top right corner. I suggest that clicking on that symbol would likewise display the map.
Unlike the “is sharing” bubble which could eventually disappear out of view, the symbol will always be visible, thus more useful for clicking.
