<del>Contact sharing blocked by adversary</del>?

@9er reports that sharing contact QR codes and contact links does not work if the domain delta.chat is blocked.

EDIT: Users can circumvent this blocking by using a proxy (or equivalent). Then they can share contacts.

Thank you for trying to help me, but corrections are needed here.

At least big part of mail servers listed in DC apps are blocked in at least one country.

In the same time app installs are perfectly possible from official app markets.
Sharing of contact QR codes and links works ok, if educated user enables proxy or uses some another techniques.

My questions are more on usability - how in such circumstances still allow new users to start using DC without jumping through too many hoops.

I’ve corrected. Contact sharing is blocked, but savvy users can circumvent the blocking. I hope this is correct now.

I’m glad installing the app is easy. The devs know that the servers listed in public are usually blocked. That’s why many servers are unlisted.

if Delta Chat is installed, it does not matter, if the domain delta.chat is blocked. all information needed are in the URL or the QR code you pass around.

the domain is only used as a fallback if Delta Chat is not installed, to show some hints how to install Delta Chat.

of course, it is different when relays are blocked, then a proxy or another relay would be needed

Oh good, that is how I thought it worked, and I was really rather concerned by indications otherwise. I’ll edit the title accordingly. @9er, can you explain where you are seeing problems? I clearly misunderstood more than I thought. Apologies to you both.

I think I misunderstood that thread, @9er.

List of possibilities:

  1. 9er knows some people have trouble sharing contacts, when some domains are blocked.
  2. 9er thinks some people may have trouble sharing contacts. But 9er does not know if this is a problem.

Before, I thought that (1) was true. Now I think (2) is true, because @r10 says that (1) should not be possible.

Of course, if (1) is true, 9er, please correct me!
