Help request: How to leave a group after having uninstalled Delta Chat

Hi Delta Chat fans! Writing here to humbly ask for some help with an issue I’m having.

Problem

  • I installed Delta Chat (or was it Arcane Chat? I can’t remember), and signed up with my existing email, and joined some chat group. Very cool!
  • Later on, decided it was not for me, and uninstalled the app
  • Now, there is no way to remove myself from that group
  • I’ve tried to re-download and log back in with DeltaChat, but the group does not show up when I log back in
  • I’ve tried emailing the address that is the sender for the large amount of mail I receive (wlnewteb8kntjjqhlx9w@chat.in-the.eu), but then I just get an automatic response that it can’t be delivered

Response when writing to ask to be unsubscribed

Subject Delivery Status Notification (Failure)
Body

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:
    wlnewteb8kntjjqhlx9w@chat.in-the.eu

Technical details of permanent failure:

523 Encryption Needed: Invalid Unencrypted Mail

... And more irrelevant stuff ...

Same with another address that is writing me 3dewdd4p5gciuyokcvat@chat.in-the.eu

Tried solutions

Delta Chat version

v2.43.0
NixOS (so Linux)

Expected behavior

Being able to leave a group and stop getting a bunch of emails

Actual behavior

I get so many emails that I can’t read, it’s totally filling up my inbox!

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Install Delta Chat, log in with existing email account
  2. Join a chat group (in my case, wlnewteb8kntjjqhlx9w@chat.in-the.eu
  3. Decide it’s cool but not for me, and uninstall Delta Chat
  4. Every time someone writes a message in that group, you will receive an unreadable email

Possible long term solutions

Allow unsubscription from groups also from “normal” email, with some command like sending an email with subject “unsubscribe” or “leave group” or something.

You need to ask a participant from each group to remove you from said group.

If you still have invite links (or know who invited you previously), you can create a new profile, join said groups yourself to remove your past account from the group, and then also leave the group from the new account.

for casual readers:

while using a zero-configure chatmail profile is recommended, it is okay to log in with an email account as well. esp. self-hosted accounts work quite okay-ish. however, you should not use an account you’re using elsewhere. Delta Chat also says that when trying to log in: “Do not use an address you’re using elsewhere”. this will avoid that problem in general.

but sure, esp. for years-old accounts, the issue is totally understandable, the tipps mentioned above may help in that case today
