While testing DC-Desktop 1.49, I noticed three things that could perhaps be improved. Admittedly, these are really small things, but I just wanted to post them.
You can now select and send multiple images and files at once. That’s great. A confirmation dialog is displayed before sending. Regardless of whether you have selected images or files, this dialog window mentions files.
I think it would be a bit better if you were asked for images when you want to send images and for files when you want to send files.
Many people want to send images without compression. If a user clicks the wrong button, they would then notice it more easily.
In the German dialog window where a private tag can be entered, the “Zum Beispiel” before “Familie, Arbeit, Freunde” is missing. Maybe it would also be better if the three examples were displayed in white font?
I like the new icon for macOS. But I think the logo looks too small in the dock compared to that of other programs. Perhaps it would make sense if a user could select the icon? That way you could choose between the old and the new one.
I’ve played around a bit and think that the icon used in Mastodon would be suitable too. In one example I made it a little smaller and in the other one I added a grey border. Now it looks a bit like in iOS. Unfortunately, I can’t estimate how much effort it would take. But many apps now offer the option of using an alternative icon. For example Telegram and Threema.
In the example image below, the new icon appears larger than it actually is. But of course this is all very subjective.
Example image with two alternative icons compared to the current one:
for the images/files thingie, i can say, that we have the “files” wording on android since forever, without much issues. let’s see if that really causes issues on desktop [1]
for the missing “zum Beispiel” in the german translation: i added that
for the icon, i also find that too detailed, compared to other macOS icons, it does not fit nicely. +1 for using the light icon from mastodon (that is the second row of the examples you posted)
there are also ideas to add choices for sending raw image data, however, this is not a priority at the moment, and needs UI considerations that would require resources not free at the moment. whatsapp did not have that option for most of the time being as well, btw. atm, we aim for bugfixing and stability, not for new features unless they have huge impact ↩︎
