I’m new to deltachat, although I’ve been using it with a small group of people for several years. I’ve been using an existing, widely used email address, which is why I want to switch to chatmail relays.
I’ve always considered the ability to use a single profile on multiple devices to be an important feature. Now I need additional profiles because I want to import the contacts from the profile linked to my real email address and, if necessary, split them up.
After creating a new profile with a chatmail relay, I wanted to set it up on other devices but couldn’t find a way to transfer just one profile. According to the instructions, the solution is to add a second device, but that only works with a fresh installation. To be on the safe side, I tried it with a test phone and found that this only transfers the current profile.
The backup feature also only covers one profile, and to transfer it to another device, the only option I found was to install the app using the existing profile from the backup.
In the FAQs, under “Using Multiple Devices,” only the second device is ever mentioned. I’ve used one profile on more than two devices, though I haven’t double-checked whether all messages are actually present on every device. Since I don’t see a list of all linked devices, I suspect that a message is considered delivered once it’s been marked as read on one device. Where can I find more detailed information on this?
I’m not sure what I’m missing. Right now, I can’t find a way to set up my second profile on my other devices without losing the existing profiles there.
