"Independency" requires own email-server (tips on how to run)

Thanks! I made my server and wrote that guide before Chatmail existed and haven’t learned to install/config a Chatmail server yet so I may not be correct in the pros/cons, but in my opinion:

Chatmail

  • Less spam since it only allows autocrypt encrypted messages
  • No need to register with Google, Microsoft Outlook, Yahoo since those servers won’t be able to read the messages anyway
  • Works best with Delta Chat only, but also may work with other email clients that add autocrypt support
  • Less need to worry about your IP address being on block lists since you’re probably only going to be connecting to other Chatmail servers

Normal email

  • Does not have push notifications only on iOS (push works on all other platforms where IMAP IDLE standard is allowed to function).
  • Works on any email client in addition to Delta Chat (you can switch whenever you feel like it.)
  • Can make accounts with readable usernames instead of random usernames (Can you do that with Chatmail??)

nine.testrun.org has the restriction that your account name needs to be 9 character/letters . first one that logs in claims the account, that is the registration on chatmail. So yes you can have custom names. other chatmail instances might have different limits/conditions, as you can configure those.

While you can select a non-random email address, it is generally discouraged because then your mailbox will stand out in the list of all mailboxes. You can do this manually as @Simon notes above, but it is not supported. I would like to have something like OPAQUE SASL Mechanism for authentication eventually so the server never learns the password, then “just log in” would not work anymore.
