Expected behavior
There’s no expectation. It’s just an idea. It’s useful though.
Actual behavior
Right now, only individual contacts can be added to the mailing list.
Why is this a good idea?
Sometimes, mailing lists can be used to disseminate information. For instance, I am a choir director. Some of our singers only know the western staff notation. The rest of us use the historical neumatic notation of our musical tradition.
Thus, it’s helpful sometimes to have separate groups sometimes, so I can send one version of the music to the staff people, and a different version to the neumes people.
For announcements, however, I want my messages to go to both groups. I could maintain a redundant members list for the announcements mailing list. That would be tedious. I’d have to make sure all membership changes are replicated in both lists.
Alternatively, I could just make a mailing list that forwards to both groups. Easy.
Or let’s say I want to make practice announcements, but some of the people that come to practice aren’t yet comfortable actually singing in the choir (they’re still learning; little by little). I would need a separate announcement list for that, with a third version of the membership list. Or I could make a separate announcement list, which forwards to the first annonucement list, but also adds extra people… or if it’s simpler for implementation reasons, I could make the second announcement list forward to those two notation groupchats while also adding the extra people to the mailing list specifically.
