Expected behavior

When a contact sends me a message, I get it within a few seconds.

Actual behavior

All messages arrive hours/days later.

Critically, DeltaChat seems to be stuck try to connect to the INBOX mailbox (connects fine on the Deltachat one)

If this is your own server, could you setup a test account and send me credentials so I can debug it?

Repeated “Marked messages … in folder DeltaChat as seen.” messages look very strange as well, this should not happen.

I have configured elouan@guakamole.org and it worked flawlessly.

Then I noticed that in your logfile in the first post you have the email address set to severin@guakamole.org, but IMAP and SMTP login is skadge@guakamole.org. So I tried to do the same, changed the address to foobar@guakamole.org like this:

Ok, the address is not actually a problem. I configured it back to elouan@guakamole.org and the problem continues.

So the problem is that the server makes DeltaChat folder selectable under the name DeltaChat, but also visible under the name INBOX.DeltaChat. DeltaChat then constantly detects “new” mails in the INBOX.DeltaChat folder during all folder scan and moves them to the DeltaChat folder. Actually the messages are just moved to the same folder, but get new UIDs. Then Delta chat again detects them as new in the INBOX.DeltaChat folder. This happens on the INBOX connection, this is why it looks constantly busy.

With this server configuration all folders are selected both under the INBOX prefix and without it, e.g. both SELECT Trash and SELECT Inbox.Trash lead to the same result.

severin@guakamole.org is an alias of skadge@guakamole.org, and the one that I publicly share. So yes, both emails are expected.

Great! Thanks for much for the investigation! I don’t think I’ve changed any default parameter, so I guess that issue could occur with other customers of this email provider. Is this aliasing between DeltaChat and INBOX.DeltaChat an IMAP feature? If so, I guess DeltaChat would need to learn how to deal with it. If it isn’t, then we need to figure out why/how they do that…

Yes, it is one of the many ways to configure Dovecot, ideally Delta Chat should deal with any of them.

Mailcow and other servers I used before are not configured like this though, first time I see such server, otherwise the bug would have already been fixed.

FWIW I had similar problems because of a wrong configuration of namespaces in dovecot.

Since I’m not an IMAP expert and since it looked like I got it wrong, I simply fixed the server configuration and kept on, without reporting anything. However, seeing this similar error, I wonder if there could be a better way to diagnose these problems, because it took me around two weeks of trial and errors to pinpoint the real problem :-(.

If users are expected to configure their own server and DC is so sensitive to the server configuration it would be great to be able to signal the users about misconfigurations or suspectful things.

I don’t know how much effort that would take, though, so it’s more a wish than something I think that can and should be done.

Also note that, in my case, Thunderbird was handling the “server misconfiguration” right, which led to more confusion when trying to make DC work…

Latest Android nightly includes the fix.

I recommend that you create an account in Delta Chat app from scratch with a new version, this infinite loop makes some database tables really huge by adding the same message lots of times into it.
