"Profile Description" instead of "Private Tag"

It has recently become possible to add private tags in the profile switcher, which is a great thing. In my opinion, the term is a little inappropriate. Especially the German translation “Private Bezeichnung”. I am sure that many new users do not immediately know what this means.
Perhaps “Profile Description” or “Profilbeschreibung” in German would be more self-explanatory?

agreed – this “private tag” terming slipped in a bit on the side, and sounds to me like a pretty technical term IMO. “profile description” or just “description” is much better. @r10s @adbenitez @zeitschlag

it used to be “set tag” but “private tag” was suggested, “profile description” sounds like a setting to set your profile description (what we call “bio” in the settings)

“profile label”, or “profile tag” fits better IMHO

The privacy (only visible to yourself) part is already explained in the dialog, so I think we don’t have to include “private” in the button/option label.

i agree with @Simon, the “private” seems to be not needed in the name of the thing, ftr previous discussion at allow to set tags on profiles by adbenitez · Pull Request #3373 · deltachat/deltachat-android · GitHub

so, maybe just “Label”? or just “Tag”? or as suggested by @hpk just “Description”? that it is a "Profile Sth"was assumed that time to be clear from the context - but we can of course iterate, indeed it was added a bit on the side, among lots of other ongoings  so i.e.

I think at least for the German version, “description”/“Beschreibung” would be more appropriate than “label”/“Etikett”. But profile description would be more self-explanatory. Otherwise users will first ask themselves what kind of description? The text explains that only the user can see this description. This also distinguishes between the signature/bio.

“Profile Description” would be fine for me as well:

for german: we can go “Profilbeschreibung” in any case, “Profiletikett” sounds quite off, indeed

it is totally fine to have it “Label” in English and use something that fits better in German, I guess even there just “Description” or “Profile description” can also be confused with the profile description / biography as used by other apps and social networks

Firstly I want to say that it’s great to see this feature introduced. It’s very useful. Great work from the contributors!

I think all of the points made in the above discussion are valid. I can see how “profile description” would be appropriate but also possibly mistaken for a bio. I agree that the privacy part is explained in the dialog, though only after selecting the menu item. And clearly the German localization can be refined.

The other two menu items (“Mute Notifications” and “Delete”) include a verb, so maybe it would make sense to do the same for the label, for example “Add (Private) Label” if the label hasn’t been set or “Edit (Private) Label” if the label has been set?

Aside from the wording of the menu item, I’d note that it might be helpful to visually distinguish the private label from the profile name more in the profile switcher. The screenshots in Asiel’s pull request show the private label and the profile name in distinctly different colors, but on my device, at least with dark mode enabled, they show up in the same color and the font size is only slightly different.

I also think that some people could find it more helpful to emphasize the private label instead of the profile name (display the private label in larger font and the profile name in smaller font) but I’m sure people will have different opinions about that.
