I’m onboarding new “mainstream” users coming directly from WhatsApp, and this is the number one problem they notice.
I don’t know how hard is to implement the right solution. For what is worth it, Mastodon didn’t have proper editing for years but at least they offered (and still offer, next to “Edit”) an option to delete a message but keeping the content as a draft in the Publish form, so you can edit whatever and publish again. It wasn’t great but it did the trick. Has something like this been considered? Maybe this is what the discussion just above is about, but I’m getting lost in the details (and the years past).
adding message edition is probably easier than message deletion + draft, also less confusing, in mastodon it is not so bad, but in a chat where the order of messages matter, it would be pretty confusing
honestly i don’t like too much the capability of edit message.
In fact I don’t want to be annoying , if I don’t like something I can just not use it.
However when I use other chats I always try to control myself and not edit my messages too much, I like to learn to tolerate my mistakes and it is not a problem to quote later my message and correct the mistake if it is necessary and maybe it is also more visible.
But these are just my two cents.
typos can be awkward in some situations, with close people I don’t care too much, but for example I also want to use Delta Chat for doing “language exchange” with some new friends, and there it is not nice if I am teaching them my native language and I did some typo, it is better to correct the message so they learn properly etc
Mobile typing on the go + autocorrect is prone to typos or even totally different words. And in any case, as you say, it should be up to the user to decide whether they want to edit their (recent only?) messages or not.
