I used DeltaChat a while ago to communicate by email with some people, but I never could get it play well with my incoming stream of automated e-mails. Still, I believe that mail is a good transport for a chat application and I’m giving it another try.
However, I believe at some point in the past it was possible to add any e-mail address as a contact, and when sending the message, the person would receive it as e-mail and would be able to respond. I believe this is a great feature to allow onboarding of new users.
But now, starting up the application, both with a chatmail account and a traditional email account, I see no way to add a new contact without using the QR code function or invite link which does not work so well. An e-mail address is an easy token to share and copy/paste that always work. Also, thanks to DNS, it is possible to own a subdomain and choose the provider to delegate the handing of messages, allow for each switch between servers.
