does anyone know if an app stays active during PiP mode in iOS?
If so, perhaps this could be a way to keep DC active to check for new mails in the background.
At least as long as you don’t play other media in this mode.
The video could easily be pushed sideways out of the image so that only a marking would be visible.
In addition, you could also stop the video to save energy.
