There is a “Dismiss” button on each notification, whose purpose is not clear. What does it do? Is it “mark as read”? Is it equivalent to just swiping the notification off? Then why does it exist?
tapping “dismiss”: remove notification, clear in-app badge (do not send read receipts, however)
swiping the notification away: remove notification, in-app badge stays
wait until the notification disappears: notification stays, in-app badge stays
i am also not sure if these levels of subtle distinctions are needed and understood in practise - what are whatsapp/signal/telegram doing here?
for the wording “dismiss”: this was introduced at #2083 - nowadays, we’re also using “Mark as Read” or “Read” in the chatlist, and i do not know about many complains though we do not send read receipts in this case - maybe “Mark as Read” or “Read” is just the better wording. cc @adbenitez
nb: when tapping “reply”, the chat is not marked as noticed btw, this might be a bug
There is only “Mark as Read” and “Reply” in both Telegram and WhatsApp.
AFAIK it’s not possible to remove the in-app badge without marking the messages as “Read”.
