I am new and just testing out delta chat and was surprised to realise I could access my complete camera roll (also all pictures taken with the phone) and cannot change this permission in the ios settings like for all other apps. Same with contacts.
I don’t usually allow apps access to all my pictures but with delta chat I don’t seem to have a choice.
It’s probably the same with other settings like contacts, access to mobile data and to the local network.
I was wondering why that is and if there is a plan to change this in a near version.
Thank you
The dialog shown is the native gallery selector, delta chat can only access/see what you select there.
You can deny contact permissions, contact permissions are not required.

go into iOS system settings app, search for delta chat then change your settings.
Hello, thank you for your answer.
In the app settings for ios I can not change the permissions regarding pictures or contacts (and some other stuff). This is what I am missing.
Apart from this, usually apps ask for access before the first time something external to the app is used. But the permissions are always granted in the global settings.
Attached are pictures of what my available settings look like for delta chat and as a comparison for whatsapp.
I am running iOs 16.7.10 on an iphone 8.
Seems like other ios versions might operate differently.
Yes, thank you. I have the newest possible ios version for my phone.
It does seem like the problem is linked to my ios version.
I don’t feel comfortable using delta chat on it for now, I might have to find a newer device.
Thanks for the help!
maybe some iOS versions do not list rights that were never granted?
eg. the “contact permissions” is usually not queried by Delta Chat (queried only for “classic” email accounts).
in any case, Delta Chat does not have access nor uses the camera roll or access to “all photos”. it is the complete opposite and even better than selecting some photos manually:Delta Chat only gets access to the photo you actually want to send. the “picker” is not part of Delta Chat, but part of the system
Delta Chat uses UIImagePickerController to ask you to pick photos. As of iOS 11, this photo picker runs in a separate process and is owned by iOS, rather than by the Delta Chat application. Because the photo picker is in a separate system process, Delta Chat does not need to ask for permission to view your photos—it can only see what you select in the photo picker. There’s no bug here! And yes, iOS does not show in Settings any permissions that an app has never asked for.
Have you checked your iOS Screen Time settings? If you disable some settings in there it can sometimes have very wide ranging, unexpected, impacts on sub-menu options, like you have described.
