With this it’s up to client whether to display symbol near display name like former checkmark, or as a badge or what.
I meant, this envelope emoji would be displayed in the colored avatar placeholder like it’s done currently for contacts having encryption keys (for them the first character of their name is displayed). This, in particular, doesn’t require additional work on the UI side, but still, switching to a new API is some work and the new design should be agreed with the UI teams, so at the moment it’s only a proposal (one of many) and can’t be implemented quickly.
Hi, I’d like to bring this topic up again as I’d really love to be able to set a custom avatar instead of the grey envelope… For me, it would be best to have the possibility to choose an image from one’s own gallery, and to have a small envelope badge superimposed in the corner.
This would definitely help a lot with non-DC contacts.
Thank you for considering this as an option!

I think it would be cool to do as other email clients (e.g. Thunderbird) do, i.e. to load the appropriate picture from one’s contact list, if set. Signal does the same, if the contact hasn’t set their own avatar.
