Full support for IMAP Folder setting

I would like to officially request support for IMAP Folder setting, that is accessible and changeable for all (advanced) users.

Personally, I cannot follow the reasoning behind the removal of the “legacy” dedicated DeltaChat folder. I do not understand the thinking behind breaking a feature for all users, because some email-servers misbehave. The servers, I and my contacts are using, do not misbehave. But, it’s very easy to set the server to move the encrypted messaged into separate folder, enabling us to continue to use the email accounts for unencrypted, classic email, without the “spam” of encrypted communication.
BTW: Please skip telling me to create a separate email account for DeltaChat. I’m aware of this option and it will not be chosen.

There’s a very clever saboteur on the DeltaChat team. He’s managed to turn traditional email accounts into a living hell. Thanks to him, the number of DeltaChat users has decreased. Thanks, my dear.

Could you show a discussion about this to understand the pro and con ?

From my point of view:

Pro:

  • enables users of the “old” DeltaChat to continue to use DeltaChat with existing emails.
  • emails, and especially premium paid emails, are more stable and reliable than relays.
  • required code and feature already exists and is available to some users. So this request *should* be trivial to implement.

Cons:

  • commitment to support emails.
  • increased support requests due to increase in user base.

There are too many discussions about this to pick just one, but you should probably start by going through the following:

Thanks.

As a dev myself I understand the technical points to don’t share a standard email with a deltachat email. I understand the deception as a user.

But for new user it’s still confusing if you don’t read carefully the faq. Maybe it should be more explicit that it’s deprecated and should be maybe completely hidden on the official app.

When there is so much free relays and that it’s easy to add one, is there a reason to keep this possibility apart for legacy users ?

Classic email support is the best feature of DeltaChat, despite its limitations.

There are many chatmail servers, but far more classic ones.

Also, with a classic account you don’t have to worry about loosing messages in a device you don’t turn on in 20 days. Add a chatmail as sender in the transport mix and you can have the best of both worlds.

In some countries, all but local email providers are blocked, so chatmail may not be an option.

Finally, user freedom. Choosing any email as transport is the ultimate freedom for each user and what makes DC unique in its class.
