Help: used space on relay rapidly growing for no reason

EDIT: it’s now 93%. I haven’t sent or received any messages since I wrote this…

This evening I started receiving ‘device Messages’ warning me that I’m running out of space in my main relay (chatmail.woodpeckersnest.space) and that I could fail to receive some messages. It has a maximum limit of 150 Mb and it rapidly escalated from about 30% this afternoon to 82% and now 85%, without me receiving any heavy video from any contact (I even asked in a group if someone sent any long video).

Delta Chat version

2.48.0

What can be the cause?

What should I do? I won’t have access to alla my synchronized devices for some day.

I keep receiving device messages every few minutes.

I’ve tried going to Settings-Advanced-Relays and choosing a different one for sending messages – which is almost empty and has 500 Mb max space, but the percentages won’t change.

I even have a third one set, which is currently hidden from my contacts.

Thank you all for helping!

Tiziano

It should actually be fine as long as you have a relay that has space. Select some relay with space as the primary relay for sending so all contacts get aware of it and send messages there.

Thank you, as I stated I have already done that.

Used space is still growing for no reason though…

Could you check the logs, does it have anything about receiving messages? Are there webxdc apps used in any chats, maybe they send updates?

Well, I have found the logs, but unfortunately I don’t have the knowledge to understand anything of those. Are you interested in a particular section I can post here without sharing any sensible information?

I have multiple webxdc apps in my saved messages and some in a couple apps. I haven’t used them for days now though, and I don’t see any updates from them.

It could be that someone else is sending webxdc updates because they are using the app. The interesting part is the logs about receiving messages, so the logs need to be collected after receiving such messages that fill up the space.
You can send the logs to delta@merlinux.eu

Thank you again. Is it the part after “beginning of main” you refer to?

Right now my logs go back to 18:11 on Delta and 18:09 on Arcane (i.e. about 15 min ago). My relay at woodpeckersnest went full last night. I had switched to a different relay for sending yesterday evening. I wasn’t receiving any messages. I’ve asked a friend to send me a pic a while ago and I received it right away.

I’ve read yesterday some relay had an issue/testing some stuff and accidentially sent to everyone huge amount of service messages. That might be related

Mh not sure, unless those service messages are something I don’t get to see in-app.

Anyway, now I’m home and I’ve opened all of the clients I’m using with that profile, in my understanding the relay would be cleared once all devices are synchronised, right? But for now it’s not happening, it’s still at 100%.
Messaging is working fine through the remaining relays, but I’m still being flood-texted from all my devices about running out of storage.

I’m thinking of deleting the malfunctioning relay altogether. I already selected a different one for sending. I’ve read in the FAQ’s that

If you remove a relay, contacts who only know this relay may not reach you until you message them again. To stay reachable in the meantime, choose Hide from Contacts in the confirmation dialog instead of removing it right away.

So, if I send a message to all of my contacts, I should be safe removing it, is it right?
Thank you again

No. The relay does not know when all your devices are synchronized so the messages stay on the server until the server deletion timer clears them up. Messages are only deleted immediately from the relay when you use a single device.

That should work but at least check they sent the read receipt or sent a reply. You can also make a backup of the problematic profile so you can restore it later if you need to but theoretically the worst thing which can happen if you delete your relay too soon is you might miss a couple of messages until your contacts see the messages you send them from your new relay.
