In the contact is profile view could be shown an attribute “last seen” or something similar that let the user know what was the last time the contact was active: this will be the date of the more recent message received direct message, in-group message, or read receipt. And will be displayed as “X minutes ago” (the same behaviour than the chat messages is timestamp)
very interesting idea, but could also be confusing for users, because it’s not a real online status as it’s known from similar chat services
yeah, the idea is to counter the lack of this “online status” but not to be the same, it will show the last time the user was seen by you, not a green little badge or anything with the word “online”, but well maybe still some people may get confused… :-/

Direct connection like webrtc or zero-tier could enable us to implement it.
But on the other hand most of my contacts in other messengers disable this option anyway.
Another indirect source of this information could be read-receipts.

This is implemented in the latest version (Android v1.26.2), “Last seen” status is displayed in the contact profile.
