My replies do not appear in threads

I just replied to Setting the email subject for new contacts by sending an answer to the email notification I received. However, I cannot seem to find my reply in the forum. Does anyone know where it went? And in case this should be a bug in the forum configuration, would someone be willing to look into that?

hm, unfortunately I just saw this now, and our logs only go back one day. Can you reply to this thread per email?

I just sent a reply to this thread. Here are some headers that could help you locate it:

ah, I found your original mail now - it ran into a rate limit:

Unfortunately I can’t find a way to configure this particular rate limit. If it happens more often, feel free to ping me again and I’ll dig deeper…

I just sent a reply to your post (see below) and it does not show up either. So it would appear that the rate limit is still in effect. In total, I sent in 5 replies via email (including the one included below; originally sent Sat, 06 Sep 2025 14:50:55 +0000). Only the first one of those five replies was accepted. All subsequent replies were rejected.

If there was a way of making reply by email work again, I would very much appreciate this, since it would save me the trouble of manually reposting every reply via the web UI.

Good to hear that you figured out what happened. Also, thanks for getting my reply processed, I guess – although I had already reposted my reply manually once I noticed that it did not show up

Now, does that mean that future email-based replies from my address will work again? In total, I sent in 4 replies via email (not counting this one) – of which only one was accepted and 3 were rejected.

Accepted replies:

Rejected replies:

I’ll be curious to see if this reply shows up. If it does not – or if any other reply gets stuck – I’ll post further updates to this thread.

Can you reply to this thread per email?

Totally! Here’s a reply. Let’s see where it appears.

Hm, it seems we can’t configure discourse to do that better, sorry  RateLimiter::LimitExceeded - Feature - Discourse Meta

One thing that might help: Turning off RateLimiter::LimitExceeded entirely for one user? - #5 by jorge_castro - Support - Discourse Meta suggests that increasing someones privileges might help, so I increased your trust level from 1 “basic” to 3 “regular”.

Let’s see if the rate limiter goes easier on you now?

It does not look like it. I sent a reply to your message about an hour ago and it still does not appear. Also note that the rate limit basically kicked in after only one reply, so the second reply I sent to this forum was already rejected. I also sent the second reply more than 30 hours after sending the first one. I don’t know what kind of settings this rate limiter uses, but they do seem a little strange …

Anyway, I guess if reply-by-email does not work, I’ll have to keep reposting all my replies to the forum manually. That’s not exactly comfortable, UX-wise, but I guess it is what it is.

Thanks.

I hope this helps. Also note that the rate limit basically kicked in

Yeah, the rate limiter is shit  unfortunately I can’t disable it
