Pin a message in a group chat

Expected behavior

Pin a message in a group chat that is permanently visible on top of conversation like in Telegram

Thank you

Actual behavior

it is not possible to PIN a message in a group chat.

This feature is needed in all chats, not only group chats.

for the record, at least some devs also think about “pinning messages” from time to time

but it is also always in competition for the few resources with other things that are regarded to have an even bigger impact - or randomly has someone to care for

Is such a feature al least in a road map?

Signal recently introduced pinned messages:

And on the official blog now, posted on 2026-01-29: Signal >> Blog >> Put a pin in it

signal does not send “pinned messages” to members joining after the message was pinned. makes some sense, one can argue that way. esp. in combination with group descriptions.

in any case, this simplification would make pinning core-sided easier for us, as we would not need to resend messages on behalf of others. doable sure, but not done, and kind of blocker - apart from doing tons of other, even more important things

good point, at least allowing to pin for existing members is already an improvement, letting new members access pinned messages is only an extra feature we lack similar to message history when joining a chat

After adding new members, users could simply repin a message manually, just as they can already resend messages. Pinned messages will likely change more often or be removed after a while, unlike group descriptions. The latter are better suited for basic information that doesn’t change constantly about a group.

the problem is that the new member doesn’t have the chat history with old messages, so if by “repin” you meant “pin again an old message that was sent before the user joined” then no, that will not work, if you meant “send a new copy of the message (or resend if you were the sender of the old message) and then pin it again” then yes, that will work, but that is not practical if the pinned message is a webxdc and you are not the sender, you can’t resend it with its state

anyways, no point on keep speculating and going around the bush, there is a clear path forward: adding basic pinned messages without caring about new members, once we have that, then it is easier to keep thinking how to improve further from practical experiences and think about how to make it so the new members also get the pinned message or if it is good enough like that

Yes, that’s what I meant. It might be a bit cumbersome, but new members aren’t being added all the time. If a message is important, someone could simply resend and repin it.

I like to pin messages for myself for note keeping.
Having pin messages would really improve me using DeltaChat.
Is someone working on this or is it planned?

I like to pin messages for myself for note keeping.

“Pinned Messages”, as discussed here and implemented in most other apps, will pin the message for everyone in the chat.

if you mean more personal notes or reminders, better use “Saved Messages” or “Pinned Chats” - where both are already working today

Pinned chats but then for messages in my saved massages.

must have feature (using webxdc for this sounds like a hack?)

It could be done on stage 1 just by adding pinned messages id’s in field like “chat description” and sending it same as chat avatar and description when joining.

And at stage 2 clients could ask authors to resend those messages for them, to recreate pins and possible a part of chat history later.

webxdc can not work this around unless the whole group chat is reimplemented inside that webxdc itself.

A bot could still provide a valid workaround:

A pinned messages feature is critically needed in Delta Chat. In active chats, important information (rules, instructions, links) quickly gets lost in the flow of messages, forcing users to constantly search for it.

This really useful feature, we need it

Pinned messages are needed.

This function is important. Now it is in demand more than ever.
