Parallel to Change warning message when deleting a chat? : when deleting multiple messages, have a warning/confirmation popup, with an “Also delete mails on server” tickbox option.
Example
Deleting these messages from Delta Chat.
Also delete messages from server. This may irreversibly delete all copies of these e-mails. Don’t show this warning again.
[Delete all]
Default=unticked, warning hidden. Warning appears when box is ticked. Delete-all button could turn red.
DC is not for dealing with email, if you use it for email you are expected to be advanced user and understand the risks, anyways in any other email client if you delete an email it is deleted
it doesn’t make sense to talk about email to most users that will be using the app for chatting and with chatmail, it is expected behavior that if you delete a message it is gone, not magically still stored somewhere “you are violating my privacy! I had deleted that private message!”
Hmm. How about @2q9lgj6vm’s other suggestion, of warning just advanced users on import?
When I’m using a new program, I like the interface to make it clear whether I am deleting from the interface or the server, because both configs are fairly common. It seems that the UI is currently ambiguous.
There are probably multiple sensible ways to clarify, though. Other sugestions, anyone?
“Classic e-mail” is jargon specific to the Deltachat community. The phrase is also used in other senses elsewhere. “Non-Chatmail e-mail”, with the link, would be unambiguous. “Conventional unencrypted e-mail” and “Conventional e-mail account that permits unencrypted messages” would also be clear, if wordier.
In chat
So, for instance: Messages in this chat use classic email and are not encrypted
Could be: Messages in this chat are not encrypted. Use a Chatmail account to guarantee that all chats are encrypted
“Use a Chatmail account” could be a link to a how-to. But I think it might be too longwinded to have something like:
To guarantee that all chats are encrypted, you can use a free Chatmail account (one that cannot send or receive unencrypted messages) instead of this conventional e-mail account.
During setup
I suggest informative rather than proscriptive language:
Using an e-mail account in Deltachat while also using it for other purposes may cause issues.
And
Using a Chatmail account guarantees encryption and is recommended. Using a conventional e-mail account permits unencrypted messages.
