It doesn’t use chatmail but sharing bc of the webxdc support! It uses the “marmot” protocol that is built on Nostr
The protocol will be blocked in Russia and that will be the end of it.
How would that happen?
Just like they blocked WhatsApp, Telegram, YouTube, and so on.
But of course it will continue to work in other countries.
Nostr is a protocol just like chatmail. It’s just a bunch of different servers running on regular web traffic.
It is often easier to block protocols, because they often have plaintext metadata that says “I am protocol X”. Deltachat messages say “I am an e-mail”, and any government that blocked all e-mails would abruptly have serious problems. Russia does block all e-mails not from government mailservers in some remote areas, and may extend this strategy in future.
Remember that HTTPS is blocked even less often than SMTP & IMAP, so messaging protocols that support web apps are at an advantage here. If only DC had one…
That’s really cool! I didn’t know that.
Oh…
Another Nostr app that wants to support WebXDC. GitHub - ZharlieW/Aegis: Simple and cross-platform Nostr signer
Future plans
- Nostr apps – Support local WebXDC format.
I’m glad that WebXDC is getting support over there!
