This might not be possible because of AutoCrypt keys-- But given the ease of setting up multiple accounts, and the fact that some are Automatically destroyed with lack of use at the server end, is there a way to move chat mail messages from one account to another like one might with IMAP?
Provided an account has all the keys necessary to decrypt the messages. One can move messages from one standard email to another, but is it possible to consolidate multiple accounts into one?
For example, I have a standard email with Delta, and a chat mail account (A) with Delta and set up a third chat mail account (B). If I want to move all standard email to chat mail account A, how might one do that? Or say, I want to Begin self hosting a chat, mail server and want to move my messages from chatmail B to self hosted chat mail C?
I searched and for whatever reason I didn’t see anything like this used case.
If one has a year or so of messages, it’s nice to be able to keep those messages like one night when changing emails, even if the sender address changes
I suppose this could be given a use-case:
I am using the notes to self for important notes, pdfs etc, and use it with a chat mail account. But if I move chatmail servers, or change profiles with which I communicate, it would be nice to be able to move my own data across profiles/accounts. I move my notes to self manually from traditional email acct to chatmail profile by manually forwarding each notes, but it would be nice if there was a more streamlined approach similar to moving messages on IMAP (provided the destination has key )
This question is somewhat prompted because the iOS widget doesn’t seem to support multiple profiles, so I had to start using chatmail for notes to self.
There have been some thoughts about allowing to “forward” messages between profiles, this should be doable. If the destination profile is a single-device, this should not even result in additional sent messages.
Moving the whole chat from one profile to another to populate the chat history is technically doable even if the second profile is not a member of the chat, but there are a lot of little details because you also need to copy the contacts and blobs.
On two iOS devices I could not get notes to self working across two profiles (email for nts and chatmail for most messages). It would display on widget but not bring up the correct acct window.
Edit: I figured it out: you cannot have multiple “notes to self” in the homescreen widget: only one allowed at a time)
And yes, “share to” is another that I use frequently
(Tap and hold on a chat crashes iPad app so adding to widget is a little complicated anyway. )
Perhaps instead of moving threads individually, which could get complex, just importing a local back up messages and keys into another account so that messages from prior backups can be accessed in a current profile,
It would be nice if one could move message to message like IMAP, but Restoring a local backup irrespective of account ID would be useful. Similar to how signal can restore local backups, regardless of current phone number. (Or maybe I am mistaken and this can be done already?)
two more use-cases where moving messages between accounts (as I have done in standard IMAP email):
a) I have a public-facing delta link (email), and a private messenger (chatmail) for quick-push notifications. It would be nice to be able to begin messaging a contact in the latter, even if the correspondence begins in the former. If so, moving the messages from email to chatmail
b) if I wish to transition to self-hosted, or the existing chatmail profile/server discontinues, then I would like to be able to retain those messages I have on-device and keep them in an active (chatmail/email) profile, whichever one might work.
Decryption and key management being unlike PGP, this may not be possible with autocrypt?
