No, chatmail does not prevent this, assuming there has not been a change I am unaware of. A new chat is only blocked for the first few seconds and after that, a new contact is allowed to send you unencrypted messages until they receive your encryption key.
I agree these would be nice features to have (but they’re not adoption blockers for me).
By the way, it’s the same on Android, it’s not possible to reorder profiles in the profile switcher.
Depending on which client you use, it’s possible to select multiple images and/or files at once for sending, although I assume that they are still sent as individual messages. You should be able to do this already with the Desktop client.
However the Android client will only let you select multiple images at once (but not multiple files) and the iOS client won’t let you select multiple images or files at once. Hopefully this will be addressed in a future update.
chatmail disallows sending unencrypted messages, so you might send an unencrypted message, but sending will be blocked by the mailserver (sure the mailserver could in theory see the contents of that unencrypted message, but it won’t send it further).
I agree that it would be nice to have this also blocked client side in the case of incomplete secure join - or a confirmation dialog to say “encryption not fully established yet, wait for it or send unencrypted anyway?”

Yes, the problem is not being able to decide to send all attachments in the same email.
This is not a problem for chat (although it could be if one is using a server other than chatmail so as not to run into a message limit) however, it can be a problem if one is sending an email.
However deltachat is a chat client, so let’s say it is an understandable limitation.
Email has a size limitation, so that needs to be communicated in the UI when we add the feature to send multiple images/files in one message.
But this limit is there even for a single attachment that is too large.
I think it could potentially be an additional feature to be able to decide the total size limit of attachments for a single email for our provider so that deltachat can breaks down the attachments into the smallest number of messages possible, however again, maybe it’s an overcomplicated thing.
After a few days using Delta Chat, all good, but… So far the winning annoying missing feature is the impossibility to edit sent messages (or at least delete+edit in one go, as Mastodon offered before implementing “Edit” in one go).
Sticker packs! Furries on Telegram have built up a significant cultural attachment to Telegram’s sticker packs. Lots of us have commissioned stickers of our characters, and we use them to express ourselves. But, more critically for sticker packs, people have gotten together to commission gigantic, multi-part packs (several hundred stickers) for common fursona species, like snow leopards, lynxes, red pandas, wolves, and more. Most people commission stickers knowing that other people can easily add the pack and use them, because we want to contribute to the commons.
I could convince a lot of furries to switch from Telegram to Delta Chat if it had sticker packs. (Especially with Telegram’s continued insistence on adding blockchain features and ads.)

@adbenitez doesn’t Arcane Chat have support for Telegram’s sticker packs? Would it be easy for @s0ph0s and other furries to import and use these sticker packs in Arcane Chat, or are there sticker packs already built in?
I will chime in that attachment-related messaging is my chief reservation for recommending Delta to others.
Sending files or rich media, or multiple images can quickly add up to more than the 20 mags the generally produces an error for chat mail or Gmail or whatever email. It is also asymmetrically implemented. Some mail providers allow 50 mb attachments, Others are more stringent. So there is no UI notice that the file is too big. It simply produces an error and one has to go into error messages to see what the problem is, with no advisement on how I might still send a large file. This is a major deterrent for the less technologically inclined who might be used to telegram or iMessage.
A feature implementing multi part attachments that are combined in messaging would be very useful. There is a xdc That does this, but its feature set is incredibly buggy and does not work for mobile. Since messages can be encrypted, it would be possible to have multiple messages (Containing a part of the file, perhaps zipped ) interpreted as one message (unzipped?).
The other, which is not a major deterrent, Is the ability to edit or update a message? This seems more technologically complex.emphasized text
stickers are supported including Telegram’s .tgs animated stickers, sticker selector is missing in Android, but available in Desktop, to export the “pack” there are telegram bots that can be used then is just extracting the folder in Desktop, in android they would need to manually select them from gallery, which is not as convenient as built-in sticker picker, this is something I would really like to have but it is not clear yet how the “sticker pack” concept would work in Delta Chat and I am kind of waiting for core to add the APIs the UI can use, recently we added file deduplication which is needed when you are sending the same stickers over and over so that is an step closer
Everything from my previous post has been added to Delta Chat (yay!), so I’ll make a new one.
- Worse encryption compared to e.g. Signal (no plausible deniability, no perfect forward secrecy).
- Continue where I stayed in the chat (remember scroll position).
- Lack of video messages (as in Telegram and WhatsApp). Round video messages
- Everything related to stickers is much worse compared to Telegram. Can’t search for them by emoji, can’t easily discover sticker packs and save them.
- Search GIF in chat.
- Message search sucks. It’s not fuzzy. Sometimes you want to search for a message e.g. by two words that are contained in it. For example, if the message is “Yesterday I ate a crayon. It was tasty.” then a query “crayon tasty” would not find this message.
- Lack of group calls.
- Edit: The fact that the other party can edit and delete their messages for everyone regardless of how old the message is.
Not so big but still infuriating:
- Not a missing feature, but the full screen image viewer in desktop sucks. Have to click a tiny cross button to exit it. And the fact that you always have to enter full screen in order to see the uncropped image. And the scroll wheel scrolls the image up and down instead of zooming.
- The lack of the ability to search for an emoji as a reaction on Android. You have to scroll through the (incomplete) list of emojis.
- Old notifications (once they time out and disappear from the bottom right corner) on desktop are close to useless. There is too many of them, i.e. one notification per message, instead of one notification per chat (a problem for group chats), and oftentimes they don’t even get removed even if you already opened the chat. This used to be much worse a few months ago, but there is still work to do. - desktop is sluggish (performance) unless you have a $1000+ machine with idle CPU and disk.
Is Deltatouch, which also runs on desktop, less sluggish?
I can’t compare it, unfortunately, but I would guess that it should be, because it doesn’t need IPC and all this JSON parsing and stringification (I’m not sure if it still uses those though).
I think that, apart from new features, it’s also important to standardize the functionality across the different clients. Full synchronization between all devices would certainly make sense as well. Contacts and profile descriptions are not synchronized yet.
As far as I know, these features aren’t supported by all clients:
- Sending multiple files at once (only possible in DC-Desktop)
- Selecting multiple contacts (only possible in DC-Android)
- Password prompt when creating backups and adding an additional device (missing in DC-Desktop)
- Forwarding to multiple recipients (only possible in DC-Android)
- Taking and sending photos and videos (missing in DC-Desktop)
- Clickable hashtags (only in DC-Desktop)
- Set a separate background image for each profile (only possible in DC-Android)
- Back up all profiles at once (only possible in DC-Android)
Selecting multiple messages at once is currently not supported in DC-Desktop. However, as far as I know, this feature is in development. That is why it is not listed here.

Oh, that’s a misunderstanding. I wasn’t referring to the bio, but to the profile description that appears in the profile switcher. If you use the same one on multiple devices and want to change the description, you have to do it manually on each one.
As for syncing contacts, I don’t know how others do it, but I always delete outdated contacts to keep the list tidy. Unfortunately, you have to repeat this on every device with the same profile. Besides, it’s only possible to select multiple contacts at once in DC-Android.
I’m still waiting for stickers. At some point I think I’m going to have to implement sharable sticker packs myself, because it doesn’t seem like it’s a priority for anyone else
My friends have been using the stickers that are built in to iOS. But if someone posts one of those, the other people can’t hold down to save it in the iOS stickers. You’d have to save it as a photo and then hold down on that photo to save it as a sticker… lol
